The Higher Technical School "Angel Kanchev" established a Mathematics Centre with the following departments in 1981:
• Algebra and geometry;
• Mathematical analysis;
• Numerical methods and statistics;
• Informatics.
In 1994, the Centre for Mathematics became part of the Faculty of Pedagogy, which was created at the time, and the sectors were transformed into departments. In 2006, the Faculty of Education was transformed into the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Education.
In 2012, by decision of the Academic Council of the University of Ruse, the departments "Algebra and Geometry" and "Mathematical Analysis" were united in the department "Mathematics". It includes 19 teachers and one administrative secretary as: 1 is a professor, 8 are associate professors, 6 are senior assistants, 4 of whom are doctors, 4 are assistants. 6 doctoral students are studying at the department.
The heads of the "Algebra and Geometry" department were:
• Prof. Svetoslav Bilchev, PhD, 1981-1994 and 2004-2010;
• Associate Professor Petar Rashkov, PhD, 1994 – 2004;
• Associate Professor Yuri Kandilarov, PhD, 2010 – 2012.
The heads of the "Mathematical Analysis" department were:
• Prof. Dimitar Panteleev, PhD, 1981 – 1996;
• Prof. Pavel Pavlov, PhD, 1996 – 2004;
• Prof. Stepan Terzian, PhD, 2004 – 2012.
The heads of the unified "Mathematics" department were:
• Prof. Stepan Terzian, PhD, 2012 – 2017;
• Associate Professor Antoaneta Mihova, PhD, 2018 – 2019;
• Associate Professor Yuri Kandilarov, PhD, 2020 - until now.
